Motorola Droid Verizon Question?

For this phone, do you have to pay a monthly fee for the internet, or can you choose to not pay the fee? Like for the blackberry you had to pay a monthly fee, whether you wanted to pay for the internet or not, but is this true for the droid too? Thanks!
